Are Middlesex County Court Records Public?

Yes. Middlesex County court records are classified as public records in New Jersey. However, while court records have the public record classification, access is not governed by the New Jersey Open Public Records Act. Public access to court records in the county is provided for under court rules, specifically NJ Court Rule 1:38-1.

While members of the public have a general right to access court records in New Jersey, certain records are exempt from this access. Some of these records and case information are only accessible to the case parties and authorized court personnel.

Online Access

Online access to court records in Middlesex County is provided by the New Jersey Courts through several case search portals on the Find a Case Page. The page contains unique search portals for criminal cases, criminal judgments, civil and foreclosure cases, judgment liens, tax court cases, and municipal court cases. Users can generally search for a court record by name or case number. However, any court record that is considered confidential will not show up in the search results.

In-Person Access

Online case search portals allow individuals to search and access Middlesex County case information quickly. However, these online case databases do not contain the record of every case heard in Middlesex County. As such, some searches may return a null result even if the record exists.

To access such records that are unavailable online, individuals may visit the Clerk of Court's Office where the record was filed. Requesters will need to provide at least a party name or the case number for a search to be initiated. Researchers are also allowed to obtain copies of a court record in person for a fee.

Mail and Phone Requests

Mail requests for Middlesex County court records are primarily for individuals who want to acquire a copy of a court record but are unable to visit the courthouse. Such persons may download, complete, and mail the New Jersey Judiciary Records Request Form to the appropriate Clerk of Court's Office. Requesters should also include payment for the copies and a self-addressed, stamped envelope for return mailing.

Criminal Records Access in Middlesex County
